The short answer

The best first course is rarely the one with the longest tool list. It is the one that teaches a repeatable workflow: define the task, supply useful context, review the output, and protect sensitive information.

A fundamentals course is the safer starting point for most professionals. If you already understand the basics, move to prompt engineering or workplace productivity. Since AI products change quickly, transferable prompting and verification habits matter more than memorising a specific interface.

Choose fundamentals first when…

  • You want a broad introduction to workplace AI.
  • Your tasks mix writing, analysis, brainstorming, spreadsheets, and automation.
  • You learn best from a large pool of examples and community material.
  • You are not yet sure which AI workflow will save you the most time.

Choose prompt engineering when…

  • You already understand what generative AI can and cannot do.
  • You want better control over output quality and structure.
  • Your priority is a repeatable writing, research, or productivity workflow.
  • You are ready to practise prompts on real tasks rather than only watch lessons.

What a useful AI course must teach

Look for real assignments, source checking, privacy guidance, and examples that resemble your job. Treat claims about guaranteed productivity gains or permanent “secret prompts” as warning signs. A good course leaves you with reusable processes and a small portfolio of completed work.
